Iconography

Posted on Sunday, June 10th, 2007 by Jason

The book includes three thematic icons that serve as a reference to the content.

We’ve just sent out FPO versions of these icons to the book designers at Focal Press. Below are our rough icons, it will be interesting to see what they come up with.

Writing Process

Posted on Sunday, June 10th, 2007 by Jason

I’m glad to say that the book is coming together slowly but surely.

I find the process, especially because it is a collaboration, fascinating.

In the book, we use the metaphor that editing video is like carving a statue from stone – you just need to cut away the parts that don’t look good.

That works well for the book, but in terms of actually creating the book, I would twist the metaphor around a bit, to say that we are cutting away the stone to make the statue that the stone naturally wants to be.

Which is to say that rather than making intellectual and creative choices, it feels more like we are revealing the true and ideal expression ideas and concepts that we have lived for a long time.

Gear Isn’t Everything

Posted on Sunday, June 3rd, 2007 by Jason

We are writing on our book full-time these days, and that last post got me to thinking about one of our major themes:

As the financial ceiling on professional quality production gear lowers, the new mark of professionalism will be the knowledge, creativity, and skill that you bring to a project.

Book, Book, Book

Now that we have the book deal (read impending deadline thats making me really nervous!) we have to kick it into over drive over the next month. So if I’m unresponsive to emails, phone calls and the like you now know why.

Thats not to say things aren’t going well, I guess its just that I don’t know what to expect as this is the first time that I’ve written a book. At this point we are just about half way done which is a good sign. There are still some design and technical issues to work out but I’m very confident that those will be solved quickly as our working relationship with Focal so far as been really stellar.

Alexis is on Board!

Posted on Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007 by Robbie

Respected author, colorist and all around nice guy Alexis Van Hurkman has agreed to be the technical editor for our book Final Cut Pro Workflows: A Guide Book for the Independent Studio.

As the author of two major books on color correction, and author of several manuals for Apple, Alexis brings his vast technical knowledge and know how to the process. We look forward in every way to working with him.

Got a Deal!

Posted on Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007 by Robbie

After what seems like forever, my book that I’m co-authoring with Jason Osder is going to get published. Focal Press has agreed to publish the book entitled Final Cut Pro Workflows: The Independent Studio Handbook

Obviously, Jason and I are extremely excited that the project is going to get published. For the next two months though it is going to be a LOT of work. The book project also represents a new path for both of us. Publishing and speaking is a path that interests us both and is something that in the coming years we will pursue for our business.

I’ll post updates about the project as they become available.

Alexis Van Hurkman

Posted on Friday, May 11th, 2007 by Jason

Alexis is our technical editor on the workflows book.

He’s also been a big supporter while we developed the idea.

Alexis is a multi-talented guy: author, editor, colorist, teacher, and we could not be more pleased to have him officially on the project.

Rob worked with him or the first time last year, serving as the technical editor on Alexis’s Encyclopedia of Color Corection for Final Cut Pro.
